Allergies Q & A

What causes allergies?

Allergies occur when the body's immune system reacts abnormally to a substance or “trigger” such as pollen, mold, smoke or pet dander. In people who are allergic, the immune system recognizes certain substances like pollen or dander as harmful invaders, releasing agents to fight off the invader and causing a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms. Allergic effects can occur anywhere in the body, but they occur most commonly in the lungs and airways, eyes, skin and stomach.

What symptoms can allergies cause?

Allergies can cause a wide array of symptoms, including:

  • sneezing
  • wheezing
  • itchy, watery eyes
  • runny nose
  • congestion
  • coughing
  • itchy throat
  • fatigue
  • rash or hives
  • itchy skin
  • difficulty breathing

In rare cases, an allergic reaction can cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis, which in turn can cause seizures, serious breathing problems and even death. People with serious allergies often carry a drug called epinephrine which can be quickly injected at the first sign of a reaction or when a triggering event such as a bee sting occurs.

How are allergies diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a thorough health history including a recounting of any and all symptoms you've experienced. This information can help Dr. Villagomez identify potential triggers or allergens that cause you to have symptoms. Skin tests and blood tests can also help confirm the presence of specific allergies so treatment can be customized.

How are allergies treated?

The best way to control allergic reactions is to do all you can to avoid allergens. When that isn't possible, some allergies can be managed with over-the-counter medications to control your body's immune response and reduce symptoms. Other allergies may require prescription medication or allergy shots.
