Diabetes Care Q & A

What causes diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the pancreas behaves abnormally and doesn't produce insulin the way it should or the insulin that it does make doesn't function the way it should. There are two types of diabetes. In Type 1, the pancreas makes very little or no insulin. The onset of Type 1 almost always occurs in people who are less than 30 years old. In Type 2 diabetes, insulin is produced but it doesn't work the way it should. There is no cure for diabetes, but there are ways to manage it. Type 2 tends to occur in people who are over 40 years of age and overweight or obese.

What symptoms are associated with diabetes?

Symptoms can vary based on whether a person has Type 1 or 2 diabetes. Symptoms of Type 1 include:

  • dry mouth
  • increased thirst
  • increased need to urinate
  • blurred vision
  • fatigue
  • weight loss (but no loss of appetite)

Symptoms of Type 2 include:

  • sores and cuts that are slow to heal
  • itchy skin
  • chronic yeast infections
  • increased thirst
  • dry mouth
  • need to urinate more often
  • blurred vision

How is diabetes diagnosed?

Diabetes can be diagnosed with a simple blood test to check the levels of glucose or sugar in your blood. People with diabetes have a blood sugar level that exceeds 126 mg/dl.

How is diabetes treated?

Depending on the type of diabetes you have, it can be managed with diet and exercise, oral medications and/or insulin shots. Patients also need to use special equipment to monitor their blood sugar levels throughout the day to ensure they remain stable. When not managed properly, diabetes can cause serious medical issues including kidney failure and blindness.
