Men's Health Q & A

What does a men's heath exam include?

Every exam begins with a complete personal and family medical history to uncover information that can help Dr. Villagomez determine if you have any risk factors for serious diseases. Your weight and blood pressure readings will also be recorded, and Dr. Villagomez will perform other evaluations to assess your general health. Depending on your age, he also may check for possible hernias and perform a prostate exam to check for enlargement or other issues that could indicate the need for further testing. Lab work including urinalysis or blood work and diagnostic studies like x-rays may also be ordered. Plus, you'll have plenty of time to ask health-related questions.

What types of health screenings and tests should I have?

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends asking your doctor about the following tests:

  • blood sugar, especially if your family has a history of diabetes or you have high blood pressure
  • cholesterol, beginning at age 35 and as early as age 20 if you have certain risk factors
  • colon cancer, beginning at age 50
  • abdominal aortic aneurysm, between the ages of 65 and 75 and if you've smoked more than 100 cigarettes in your lifetime
  • hepatitis C, if you were born between 1945 and 1965, had a blood transfusion before 1992 or ever injected drugs

What is low “T”?

Low “T” is a term used to describe low levels of testosterone. As men age, their hormones begin to decline. Over time, the level of testosterone being produced by the body can significantly decrease, resulting in weight gain, fatigue, loss of energy and loss of sex drive. If you have any of these symptoms, Dr. Villagomez can order a simple blood test to check your testosterone levels and then talk with you about the pros and cons of testosterone replacement.
