Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Exposed to the elements each and every day, it performs the critical function of protecting the rest of your organs from germs and other harmful elements and pathogens, as well as helping protect you from injury. To keep it healthy and enable it to do its job more effectively, skin needs regular care and maintenance, including doctor exams to check for signs of disease or conditions that can make skin itchy, dry or even cracked.
That depends in part on your risk factors, including family history of skin cancer, your level of sun exposure and your skin type. If you've never had a screening or if it's been some time since you had one, schedule an evaluation and ask Dr. Villagomez how often you should have additional screenings to ensure cancer is caught in its earliest stages.
Use the ABCDE guide to identify lesions that are:
asymmetrical, where one side does not match the other
bordered irregularly with blurred, ragged or notched edges
colored irregularly with different shades of brown, black, pink, white or blue
greater than the diameter of a pencil eraser
evolving or changing in size, shape or color over time
The best way to care for your skin is to wear clothing that protects it from the sun, to avoid prolonged direct sun exposure and to wear sunscreen each and every day – yes, even in the winter and when it's cloudy. Make sure to drink plenty of water and follow a healthy diet and avoid super-hot showers, which can dry skin and cause it to become itchy.
