Women's Health Q & A

What does a women's health exam include?

Your exam begins with a detailed medical history as well as a family medical history so Dr. Villagomez can identify any potential risk factors that could make you more prone to certain diseases. A physical exam including a breast exam and a Pap test can help diagnose cancers and sexually transmitted diseases in their earliest and most treatable stages. Height, weight and blood pressure measurements will also be taken, and you'll have plenty of time to discuss health-related concerns and ask questions. Dr. Villagomez may also order lab work to screen for other diseases like diabetes or high cholesterol.

What medical tests are important for women to have?

The U.S. Department of health and Human Services recommends these tests and screenings:

  • blood pressure at every doctor's visit (at least annually)
  • cholesterol, beginning at age 20 to obtain a baseline
  • blood sugar for those with high blood pressure
  • cervical cancer (Pap test) every three or five years, depending on your age
  • mammogram starting at age 50
  • colorectal cancer starting at age 50
  • bone mineral density for women 65 years of age and older

Dr. Villagomez will be able to determine which tests are right for you based on your risk factors, and he can also determine how often you should be tested.

How can I decide which birth control method is right for me?

The best way to choose a birth control method is to discuss your needs with Dr. Villagomez. He'll be able to review your options so you can decide which one is most convenient and easiest for you to use. Women who find their birth control easy to use are more likely to use it, and therefore, more likely to avoid becoming pregnant.
